Thankful For Cypress

Getting ready for the holidays means shopping, cleaning, preparing for family to arrive, traveling, more shopping, cooking, eating, laughing, and embracing time with loved ones. The kids will be out of school for a few days and you are going to need everything you can to get you through the next couple of months:

cypressThanksgiving will soon be upon us and we are so thankful for Cypress! In addition to Cypress’ wonderfully clean, woodsy smell that can be used to fill your home this Thanksgiving, it can also be used to promote emotional balance, uplift, invigorate, stimulate, and reenergize the entire family. Cypress is commonly used in many salons and therapy offices because of its rejuvenating properties and benefits for the skin. Cypress can also be used to break up phlegm and assist with clearing cough and chest congestion. Try these favorite recipes this holiday season:

Top 10 diffuser blend

It’s the weekend! Why not get the day started off right. The following blends are meant to be used in a cold-air diffuser. The type of diffusers I use require a small amount of water to which the oils are added. I generally use 6-8 drops of oil per “batch.” If you don’t have one of the components, you can still try the recipe without it. Enjoy these and maybe share your favorites with us.

1. The Wake Up Blend

This is a much-loved combo, and for good reason! It’s perfect to increase alertness, or when you need a quick pick-me-up:
3 drops Wild Orange EO
3 drops Peppermint EO

2. Fresh and Clean

This blend is wonderful for creating a welcoming atmosphere in your home. It’s bright and fresh: 2 drops Lavender
2 drops Lemon
2 drops Rosemary

3. Odor Eliminator

We are animal-people, and we’ve had our fair share of “incidences” in our house. Whenever this happens, I like to diffuse this blend. It freshens up the air in no time: 2 drops Lemon
1 drop Melaleuca
1 drop Lime
1 drop White Fir
1 drop of Cilantro

4. Seasonal Support

These three oils together are spectacular for helping to maintain clear breathing and a healthy immune response. I use this blend especially during the spring and summer months: 2 drops Lavender
2 drops Lemon
2 drops Peppermint

5. Citrus Explosion

I love diffusing citrus blends when we have company coming over. It makes my house smell happy and clean. 1 drop Lemon
1 drop Lime
1 drop Wild Orange
1 drop Grapefruit
1 drop Bergamot

6. Take a Deep Breath Blend

I tend to be a very high-energy person. The good part of that? I get a lot done. The bad part? I have a hard time settling down sometimes…
I adore this blend for the evenings when I’m trying to slow my brain down, and I also like to diffuse it in the bedroom as I fall asleep: 1 drop Bergamot
1 drop Lavender
1 drop Patchouli
1 drop Ylang Ylang

7.Respiratory Blend

Use this blend to boost respiratory function–especially during cold and flu season. 1 drop Lemon
1 drop Lime
1 drop Peppermint
1 drop Rosemary
1 drop Eucalyptus

8. Flower Garden Blend

Want your home to smell like a flower garden in full bloom? Try this one: 2 drop Clary Sage
2 drop Geranium
2 drop Lavender
2 drop Roman Chamomile

9. The Man-Cave Blend

I think this combo smells very masculine and woodsy…. 2 drops White Fir
2 drops Cypress
2 drops Wintergreen

10. Bug Repellent Blend

This combo isn’t one that I’d necessarily wear as perfume, but it contains a collection of oils that most creepy-crawlies dislike: 1 drop Lemongrass
1 drop Melaleuca
1 drop Thyme
1 drop Eucalyptus
1 drop Rosemary

Melaleuca (Tea Tree)

Commonly known as Tea Tree, Melaleuca (melaleuca alternifolia) is a bushy tree with little narrow leaves and white cottony flowers at the end of long branches and twigs. These trees are native to Australia and are now grown throughout the world including Tasmania and Kenya. The oil produced from the Melaleuca tree is colorless to pale-yellow with a strongly medicinal aroma.

History

The Australian Aborigines used Melaleuca medicinally for centuries, possibly even millennia. It’s properties were brought to the attention of the scientific community in the early 1920’s by Dr. A. R. Penfold, an Australian government scientist. By the 1940’s “Tea Tree Oil” was so valued by the government that those needed to produce it during World War II were exempt from military service in order to provide sufficient supplies for the first aid kits of all military personnel.

Melaleuca_CleaningBenefits

What makes Melaleuca so special? The oil that is steam distilled from this tree can be used for a wide variety of ailments due to its antiseptic, antifungal, and antiviral properties.

Topical treatments using Melaleuca can drastically improve acne and other skin issues. Several studies done in the last 20 years found that when treating acne, a topical gel containing 5% Melaleuca oil was found to be more effective than both a placebo and a 5% benzoyl peroxide lotion.

Because of it’s antifungal nature, a couple of drops Melaleuca essential oil slightly diluted can quickly clear up even the most intense case of athlete’s foot. It relieves the skin irritation and kills the fungus.

From a minor paper cut to a more predominant gash, the antiseptic and immunostimulant nature of Melaleuca cleans and helps prevent infection while also promoting healing. When used in a salve it acts as a natural “neosporin”.

Uses

AUTUMN WOODS DIFFUSER BLEND: Diffuse 3 drops Cedarwood, 3 drops Melaleuca, and 2 drops Cypress essential oils in your favorite diffuser to purify the air with a pleasant woodsy aroma.

ATHLETE’S FOOT SPRAY: In a 1oz glass bottle, combine 10 drops Clove, 5 drops Melaleuca, and 5 drops Oregano essential oils and fill the rest with Witch Hazel. Shake and spray on affected areas. (Not to be used more than 10 days in a row.)
