Spring Cleaning

My kids are on spring break this week. This usually means that my house will be a disaster and I will get nothing done. However, I changed my mindset and decided that I would take advantage of my kids being home and put them to work!

cleanersI really don’t like cleaning with my kids even in the house because of the harsh chemicals that are in all the cleaning products. I have to open windows, turn fans on, and wear a mask. I hate breathing in those chemicals and I don’t want to take any chances with my kids inhaling them.

Not anymore!!!!

I started cleaning with essential oils about a year ago. It was one of the last things in my life to be transformed with essential oils. I’m not sure why it took me so long, maybe because I thought that it would be too hard or too much work. It is completely the opposite. I don’t have to go to the store when I run out, I don’t have to wear masks, I don’t have to open windows in the winter time, and the best part is that my kids can help now!!!

The best way to get started cleaning with essential oils is the Cleaning Kit. It comes with Lemon, Melaleuca, Refresh, and an 8 oz PET bottle with trigger spray.

Here are a couple of my favorite recipes.

Disinfecting Toilet Bowl Cleaner

1/2 cup baking soda, 1/4 cup vinegar

10 drops of Melaleuca Essential Oil

You can combine the ingredients directly in the toilet. It will fizz. Let it sit in there for 5-10 minutes (or longer if you forget about it like me), then scrub with a toilet brush and flush.

Soap Scum Remover

1/2 cup Borax

2 cups of hot water

10 drops of Lemon Essential Oil

Mix all the ingredients in a spray bottle. Shake and spray thoroughly. Let sit for a few minutes. Use a sponge to scrub and then rinse and wipe dry.

Disinfecting Wipes

1 cup of white distilled vinegar

1 cup boiling water

10 drops of Melaleuca essential oil

10 drops of Lavender essential oil

(I have also used Lemon, Peppermint, Wild Orange, Refresh, or Shield depending on the need).

I take a roll of Costco paper towels and cut it in half. I put all of the ingredients in a container that will fit the paper towels. This is the one I use. I combine all of the ingredients in the container, gently push the paper towel roll (cardboard and all) into the container, let it sit for 20 minutes, then flip it over and set for another 15 minutes. The cardboard will pull out and you can use your wipes. You can adjust the water and vinegar amounts as needed depending on the brand of paper towels you use or if you like them more wet/not.

Carpet Freshener

1 Mason Jar with large holes in the lid

1 cup of Baking Soda

10 drops of Refresh Essential Oil

Put the baking soda in the mason jar and add essential oils. Shake well and sprinkle on carpet. Allow to sit for 20 minutes or so and then vacuum up. Super easy, simple recipe that makes your carpet smell amazing!!!!

“I have been using this oil for over a year now and I still love it. My whole family is now using it. It works great to relieve sinus pressure and some headaches that are associated with sinus pressure. It works similar to Vicks vapor rub, but I think this works better. I just put a drop under my nose and it works instantly. I actually carry it in my purse because I use it so often. Wonderful product.”-Christina

“I ordered this oil because I had the Doterra “Breath” that was gifted to me as a gift. These oils are so similar and work for my asthma attacks. I like the price and no commitment that Sparks Naturals have. I love the smell of this oil. I also like it in the respire stick. I have both products.”-Naddie

Melaleuca is highly purifying and can aid in clear breathing as well as clear and healthy complexion. It is one of the most powerful immune stimulant oils and helps fight infections of all kinds. Shield: Protective Blend

These days protecting yourself and your family is more important than ever. Spark Naturals is pleased to present this ancient blend. Legend has it that in 15th century England during the time of the great plague, grave robbers and thieves developed their own blend of Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Lemon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary to protect them while robbing the plague victims. This potent blend only contains the essential oils and no carrier oil, so be sure to dilute before topical use.

“If you use oils, this one is a must have for your arsenal. This shield essential oil blend is meant to keep you healthy even when cold and flu germs are all around you.….. I’ve used it diluted in some coconut oil with a few drops of the shield essential oil blend and dabbed it on my neck and arms. No reaction of any kind.”-Amanda M.

“We love Shield! The blend smells amazing and is great for so many things. I love to diffuse it during the fall and winter months. It’s also good for sore throats, colds, and illness-prevention. Excellent choice for your natural medicine cabinet.”-Jessica

Melaleuca (Tea Tree)

Commonly known as Tea Tree, Melaleuca (melaleuca alternifolia) is a bushy tree with little narrow leaves and white cottony flowers at the end of long branches and twigs. These trees are native to Australia and are now grown throughout the world including Tasmania and Kenya. The oil produced from the Melaleuca tree is colorless to pale-yellow with a strongly medicinal aroma.

The Australian Aborigines used Melaleuca medicinally for centuries, possibly even millennia. It’s properties were brought to the attention of the scientific community in the early 1920’s by Dr. A. R. Penfold, an Australian government scientist. By the 1940’s “Tea Tree Oil” was so valued by the government that those needed to produce it during World War II were exempt from military service in order to provide sufficient supplies for the first aid kits of all military personnel.

What makes Melaleuca so special? The oil that is steam distilled from this tree can be used for a wide variety of ailments due to its antiseptic, antifungal, and antiviral properties.

Topical treatments using Melaleuca can drastically improve acne and other skin issues. Several studies done in the last 20 years found that when treating acne, a topical gel containing 5% Melaleuca oil was found to be more effective than both a placebo and a 5% benzoyl peroxide lotion.

Because of it’s antifungal nature, a couple of drops Melaleuca essential oil slightly diluted can quickly clear up even the most intense case of athlete’s foot. It relieves the skin irritation and kills the fungus.

From a minor paper cut to a more predominant gash, the antiseptic and immunostimulant nature of Melaleuca cleans and helps prevent infection while also promoting healing. When used in a salve it acts as a natural “neosporin”.

AUTUMN WOODS DIFFUSER BLEND: Diffuse 3 drops Cedarwood, 3 drops Melaleuca, and 2 drops Cypress essential oils in your favorite diffuser to purify the air with a pleasant woodsy aroma.

ATHLETE’S FOOT SPRAY: In a 1oz glass bottle, combine 10 drops Clove, 5 drops Melaleuca, and 5 drops Oregano essential oils and fill the rest with Witch Hazel. Shake and spray on affected areas. (Not to be used more than 10 days in a row.)

DIY Natural Stain Removal

Warmer weather means more picnics, camping, parties, and outdoor play, which also means LOTS of ways to get our clothes dirty, and dare I say? Stained. 😦 When you find yourself in this situation (because let’s face it, it’s inevitable), give these solutions a try!

To start, every natural cleaning cupboard should have the following items, because they are used for practically everything. The plus side? Less chemicals in the home and cleaning supplies that are relatively cheap.

Cleaners: Corn Starch, Glycerin, and White Vinegar

Essential Oils: Citrus (Lemon, Lime, Wild Orange), Eucalyptus, Lavender, and Melaleuca

Now that you have your supplies find the stain ailing you and follow the cleaning directions. Remember, the earlier you treat a stain, the easier it is to get out. If the stain is still visible after treatment, do not put the article in the dryer (or it will permanently set) and treat again. Sometimes it takes a couple treatments to fully remove.

Explore the 5 Love Languages with Essential Oils

Happy Valentine’s, Galentine’s, Palentine’s Day!!! Everyone gives and receives love differently and today is the perfect day to explore those ways with our love of essential oils!

Acts of Service

Nothing says “I love you” like doing something to show you care. What better way than by cleaning the worst room in the house: the bathroom! Using a spray bottle with water and Refresh Blend will whip that bath/shower and toilet into shape. Try this mirror/faucet cleaner to better reflect your fabulous loved one. 😉

Mirror Cleaner

Pour water and vinegar into the spray bottle then add desired essential oil(s). Shake well before each use. Spray on mirror or faucet and wipe clean with a dry towel.

Physical Touch

As Valerie Warwood perfectly put into words, “Touch can be wonderfully reassuring and can convey the love felt between two people better than words. And there is nothing on this earth more beneficial than the energy of loving touch.” Something as simple as a foot rub or neck massage can relax and comfort. If your Val/Gal/Pal’s Love Language is physical touch, a sweet, non-assuming massage is the ticket!

Massage Oil

Combine oils and gently massage onto skin.

Quality Time

Time is a created thing. To say ‘I don’t have time,’ is like saying, ‘I don’t want to.”

― Lao Tzu

Quality does not equal quantity, but rather good use of the time you have. Whether you’re walking hand-in-hand through the park, baking together, or even watching a movie, time together is important. Just like a certain song can trigger a specific memory, so can smell. However you choose to spend time with your loved one, enhance the experience with your favorite essential oil or blend. Out of ideas? Try this blend!

Set-The-Mood Diffuser Blend

Fill diffuser to the max line and add essential oils. Diffuse to “set the mood”.

Receiving Gifts

Who here loves gifts?! This one’s for you. Flowers are great. Chocolates are yummy. But how about something new this Valentine’s Day? A diffuser necklace that can be used time and time again or a set of bath bombs for a relaxing or energizing experience would certainly do the trick. More of a DIYer? Make an invigorating sugar scrub with oils like Lemon and Lavender or Frankincense and Lime. My personal fav? Wild Orange Scrub.

Words of Affirmation

If you’re loved one thrives on words of affirmation, have we got a simple (yet loving and meaningful) idea for you! Two words: Spritzed Notecards. Yep. As easy as it sounds! Write uplifting things on several notecards such as “You are beautiful”, “Everyday I love you more”, “You are my fav!”, etc. Spritz them with Rosewater (or a spray bottle with water and a few drops of your/their favorite essential oil) and place them around the house for them to find.

So there you have it! The 5 Love Languages and essential oils. No matter how you express your love, have a wonderful, oil-tastic day! 😉
