Top 5 Ways to Shield Your Family

They lurk in door ways and restrooms. They are on the playground, at the store, even at church *gasp*. No one can escape their grasp, but there is hope. For generations people have been resisting their clutches, and now you can, too.

With school back in session, and cooler weather on the horizon, SHIELDing your family-young and old-is as important as ever.  Legend has it that in 15th century England during the time of the great plague, grave robbers developed their own blend of Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Lemon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary to protect them while robbing the plague victims. Fast Forward 600 years. With our modern blend of pure oils, here are the top 5 ways you can Shield yourself, loved ones, and community one drop (or spritz) at a time.

  1. Aromatic Diffusion: Something “in the air”? Diffuse a few drops of Shield in bedrooms, bathrooms, and other main living areas throughout the house to purify the air and allow the protective blend to enter the body’s airways. Also great for the car, office or classroom.zaq-dew-diffuser
  2. NEAT on the Feet: For preventative care, apply to the feet nightly (dilute for young or sensitive skin). When sick, apply diluted every few hours until symptoms subside. Using Base Salve, make your own Shield Salve for easy use on children and while traveling.
  3. Surface Cleaner: In a glass or PET spray bottle, combine 10 drops each of LemonShield, and Refresh, and fill to the top with distilled or purified water. Shake and spray your kitchen (and bathroom) surfaces clean!IMG_4464
  4. Sore Throat? Try this: Dilute and rub Shield onto your neck every few hours until symptoms subside. Also try gargling in one drop Shield in 4 oz. water every few hours to clean and soothe sore throats due to a Cold, Strep, Flu, etc.
  5. Hand Sanitizer: In an old hand sanitizer bottle or squeeze bottle of your choosing, combine 2 Tablespoons Aloe gel, 6 oz water, and 20-25 drops of Shield. Use when soap and water aren’t available or convenient (camping, school, dining out, etc.)img_3670

Now get out there and give it a try! Keep those icky-sick germs at bay and your friends, family, and community Shielded.

Dilute for young and sensitive skin-salves and roller bottles are a great way to have diluted blends on-hand. Use cautiously during pregnancy, always err on high dilution. Consult a doctor or Naturopath before using Shield if living with an autoimmune disease (such as Multiple Sclerosis) due to its immune-enhancing nature. Stop use if any adverse reactions occur.

Cold & Flu Kit

This year the Flu is spreading like crazy! I’m pretty sure it’s made the rounds through every work place and school across the nation in record numbers. Thank goodness for inexpensive/budget friendly NATURAL remedies, am I right? I can’t tell you how many people I’ve recommended this kit to, but I love it! Not only does it have the oils I need, but they come in a convenient case. I toss it into the diaper bag, car, purse…pretty much everywhere we go for an extended period of time this kit comes, too. While some might be turned away from a kit because it has the “smaller bottles”, because you only use a few drops at a time, this kit is perfect for your winter/illness needs. Each 5ml bottle contains roughly 100 drops of oil, which will fill many capsules and several roller bottles.

Cold & Flu Kit

Oregano (origanum vulgare): Part of the Labiatae family, Oregano is considered an analgesic, antibacterial, anti fungal, antiviral, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory and is often called “natures strongest antibiotic”. It is often used for viral and bacterial infections, as well as respiratory issues and muscular pain. Considered a “hot oil”, Oregano is one of the strongest oils on the market and should be used cautiously. After 10 days of straight use, take at least a 10 day break before using again. Best avoided if pregnant/nursing or on multiple medications. {Oregano pdf}

Melaleuca (melaleuca alternifolia): Also known as “Tea Tree”, Melaleuca is from the Myrtaceae family and is often used for acne, athlete’s foot, canker/cold sores, hives/rashes, and of course cold and flu. It is also great for laryngitis, bronchitis, lice,  and sinusitis. Melaleuca is considered to be antibacterial, anti-infectious, fungicide, antiviral, antiseptic, decongestant and anti-inflammatory. It is also generally considered safe to use with children 2months and older.  {Melaleuca pdf}

Shield (Protection Blend): The legend has its roots in 15th century England during the time of the great plague. Grave robbers and thieves developed their own blend of Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Lemon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary to protect them while robbing the plague victims. This potent blend only contains the essential oils and no carrier oil. Dilute before applying topically.

Roller Bottle: When filling a roller bottle, add drops of essential oils to be used first, then top off with the desired carrier. For kids and most skin-types, Fractionated Coconut Oil (FCO), Rosehip Seed, or Sweet Almond carriers are recommended. Dilution depends on the age and size of the person to be using the roller. Err on the side of caution and use less if you are unsure. The younger the child, the more diluted the oil should be. *Caution: Some essential oils may interact with the Roller Fitment causing an increased flow of oil or the roller ball to fall out. Avoid using with citrus and frankincense essential oils (singles or blends). Before each use, test the roller ball to make sure it is securely in place. Please exercise caution with each use and avoid using product around the eye area.

Acquaint Yourself with Cinnamon EO

Apple spice cake. Pumpkin pie. Mulled cider. Cinnamon rolls. Snickerdoodles. What do they all have in common? Cinnamon!

Cinnamon is a deep, rich spice typically associated with winter, cold, and the holidays therein-and for good reason! It is warming, can help with circulation, and can fight illness like a champ. So why limit it’s use to ciders and cakes?

From the same family as Cassia, Laurel (Bay), and Ravensara, Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil (cinamomum zeylanicum) is considered antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and a stimulant. Diffused, cinnamon cleanses the air and infuses it with a pleasant, stimulating aroma. Emotionally, Cinnamon has been known to encourage a receptive and open mind.

Fog Buster Diffuser Blend

2 drops Peppermint EO

2 drops Cinnamon EO

1 drop Rosemary EO

Oftentimes when we think of a stimulant we think of a pill or mega caffeine, but what we tend to overlook is that it is also synonymous with tonic and restorative. Blends including Cinnamon (such as Shield and Dream) can help restore healthy cells, improve blood sugar levels, and overall boost the immune system in a natural and powerful way.

One drop packs a big punch! When cooking, one drop is the equivalent of 1 teaspoon of dried spice. In a blend, one drop per teaspoon of carrier oil or 4 oz water (or more) is usually enough.

Cinnamon: 1 tsp vs 1 drop

*Cautions: Due to Cinnamon’s strength and heat, it may cause extreme irritation to eyes and skin USE WITH CAUTION AND CARE. Not recommended for pregnancy or nursing.

Kick the Cough

I don’t know about you, but lately it seems like everyone is sick-the kids, the neighbors, school class, coworkers…everyone. It hits fast and hard and then lingers for weeks. The coughing, hacking, and sore throats seem endless. While the fever has gone away, and energy is returning, the hacking cough still remains. The kids can’t miss THAT much school (nor can you miss THAT much work) so what can be done? Whip up a batch of these soothing cough drops and head out the door in confidence.

When choosing herbs and oils to use in the cough drops, it is important is use ones that will help reduce inflammation and are antibacterial/antiviral so as to not only treat the symptoms but the cause as well. That’s why for today’s recipe we chose Peppermint, Chamomile, and Lemon/Wild Orange herbs and essential oils. Pure, raw honey itself also has many healing properties including antibacterial, antiviral, cough suppressing, and is overall immunity boosting.

Homemade cough drops

1 T Chamomile (or one teabag)

1 T Peppermint Leaves (or one teabag)

6 oz  Boiling Water

¾ C Raw Honey

1 T Coconut Oil

2-4 Drops Lemon or Wild Orange Essential Oil

To Make: Steep peppermint and chamomile in boiling water for 8-10 minutes. Strain and pour into a medium saucepan (to avoid boil over). Add honey and coconut oil and cook on medium heat until boiling mixture reaches 300*F. Check with a candy thermometer or by dropping a droplet into cold water (will instantly harden when ready, carefully watch because it WILL burn if left at 300* too long). Let mixture cool for 5-10 minutes (until its syrupy) and add essential oils. Drop by small spoonfuls onto parchment paper and let cool. Dust with slippery elm bark or cornstarch and store in an airtight container.

To Use: Use one drop as needed to sooth sore, itchy throats, and coughing.

Note: Dropping by spoon is a bit less messy, but the lozenges are not uniform. Use a small silicon mold or hand form if you want uniform shapes. To take on-the-go, wrap individual drops in small squares of parchment paper.

Can’t stand peppermint? Try a drop of spearmint essential oil instead. Don’t have the herbs? Try a few drops of Shield in the honey/coconut mixture! With so many healing oils and herbs available, the flavor combos are endless. What’s YOUR favorite combo? Tell us below in the comments! Happy healing!
