What Is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is an increasingly recognized chronic pain illness, characterized by widespread muscular and skeletal aches, pains and stiffness. It is also characterized by soft tissue tenderness in various areas throughout the body, general fatigue, and inability to sleep properly. The most common areas effected by this pain are the neck, back, shoulders, pelvis, and hands – but any body part can be effected by this pain. Those who suffer from Fibromyalgia will experience pain in multiple tender points with various symptoms that will increase and decrease as time goes on.

This can often go undiagnosed for years due to extremely limited testing and diagnosis options. It is thought however that the increased pain may be due to abnormal sensory processing in the central nervous system.

Discussing current treatment protocols for the varied symptoms, Lynne K. Matallana, president of the NFA (National Fibromyalgia Association) has said, “The NFA suggests that individuals who suffer with the symptoms of Fibromyalgia implement a self-management program which incorporates both Western and complementary approaches to health care. Some people with FM are very sensitive to medicines and prefer to use more natural health care options. Dealing with the constant pain and fatigue of Fibromyalgia can be quite stressful, and finding ways to help relieve stress can also help to reduce the overall symptoms of this chronic illness. Since Fibromyalgia involves an increase in neurological sensitivity, both physically and emotionally, practices that are calming can bring a sense of relief. To accomplish these goals, we suggest aromatherapy alone or in combination with massage and other relaxation techniques. The use of fragrant herbs or oils can help promote sleep, calm the mind, decrease muscle pain, increase circulation, relieve headaches and promote a general sense of well-being.”

Essential oils can be used at home in bath and body oils, as well as through diffusion or inhalation. Here are 3 great ways to potentially find relief from symptoms when they flare up:

Black Pepper– 5 drops
Rosemary – 15 drops
Marjoram – 8 drops

Add ONLY 4 -5 drops to the warm bath, if too much, add 2-3 drops for reduced intensity.

Sweet almond oil (or a carrier oil of choice) – 2 oz.
Black Pepper – 12 drops
Marjoram – 6 drops
Juniper Berry – 6 drops
Ginger – 6 drops

Combine and use a small amount as a gentle massage oil to offer relaxing relief.

If this particular blend is too warming for you, add more carrier oil before the next use to further dilute and reduce the warming sensation to a tolerable level – we think you’ll love the warming and penetrating sensation of these oils.

Sorbolene Cream – 2oz.
Roman Chamomile – 13 drops
Marjoram – 10 drops
Helichrysum – 10 drops
Lavender – 9 drops

When you see a good result, stick with the blend that is the most effective for you. Remember, if something is too strong, you can always dilute further, or simply use less.
